Losing a beloved pet can be one of the most heartbreaking experiences a person will ever face.
They were there for the ordinary moments and the important ones. They greeted you at the door, sat beside you when life was difficult, and became woven into the rhythm of your everyday life.
When they die, the silence they leave behind can feel overwhelming.
Yet many people discover that pet loss grief is not always understood by those around them.
You may hear comments like:
"They were just a cat."
"You can always get another one."
"It was only a pet."
"They lived a good life."
While often well intended, these comments can leave you feeling very alone with the depth of your grief.
The truth is that the loss of a pet can be every bit as profound as the loss of a human loved one.
Because love is love.
And grief reflects the significance of that bond.
As a counsellor who works with pet loss, I provide support for people grieving the death of a dog, cat, horse, or other cherished animal companion.
You may be experiencing:
• Intense sadness and loneliness
• Feelings of guilt surrounding medical decisions or euthanasia
• Questioning whether you did enough
• Difficulty coping with an empty home
• Loss of routine, comfort, and companionship
• Anxiety, anger, or emotional numbness
• Grief that others don't seem to understand
• Pressure to "get back to normal"
For many people, a pet is not "like family."
They are family.
Their absence can touch every part of daily life.
Pet grief often begins long before a pet dies.
You may be caring for an aging companion, receiving difficult medical news, or facing impossible decisions about quality of life and euthanasia.
This type of grief is known as anticipatory grief.
It can bring heartbreak, uncertainty, guilt, and profound emotional exhaustion.
Counselling can provide support as you navigate these difficult decisions and prepare for what lies ahead.
You don't need to minimize your grief here.
You don't need to explain why this hurts so much.
This is a space where your relationship with your pet is honoured and your loss is taken seriously.
Together, we can:
• Process the pain of losing your companion
• Explore feelings of guilt, regret, or self-blame
• Honour the bond you shared
• Navigate euthanasia related grief and decision making
• Find ways to remember and stay connected to their memory
• Learn how to move forward while carrying their love with you
There is no timeline for pet loss grief.
There is no deadline for healing.
And there is nothing wrong with you if this loss feels enormous.
The death of a beloved pet is a significant loss.
Whether your grief is recent or years old, whether your pet died suddenly or after a long illness, your pain deserves compassion and support.
You loved deeply.
Of course it hurts deeply.
If you are looking for pet loss counselling, grief support after the death of a pet, or help coping with anticipatory grief as your companion ages or becomes ill, I am here to support you.
